The Suitable Applications of Check Valves

2024-12-02

1. Purpose of Check Valves:

• Prevent reverse flow of media.

• Commonly installed at pump and compressor outlets.

• Generally installed in equipment, systems, or pipelines to prevent backflow.

2. Types of Check Valves:

• Vertical Lift Check Valve:

• Used in horizontal pipelines with DN 50mm.

• Commonly selected for horizontal pipe installation.

• Can be installed in vertical pipelines as well.

• Straight-Through Lift Check Valve:

• Suitable for both horizontal and vertical pipelines.

• Bottom Valve:

• Typically installed at the pump inlet in vertical pipelines.

• Media flows upwards.

3. Swing Check Valve:

• Pressure & Size: Can handle high pressures (up to PN 42 MPa) and large sizes (up to DN 2000mm).

• Applications: Suitable for a wide range of media (water, steam, gas, corrosive substances, oils, food, pharmaceuticals).

• Temperature Range: Works within -196°C to 800°C.

• Installation: Can be installed in horizontal, vertical, or inclined pipelines.

4. Butterfly Check Valve:

• Pressure & Size: Suitable for low-pressure applications (PN ≤ 6.4 MPa) and large diameters (DN up to 2000mm).

• Applications: Mostly used in low-pressure, large-diameter applications.

• Installation: Installed between two flanges (wafer style) and can be used in horizontal, vertical, or inclined pipelines.

5. Diaphragm Check Valve:

• Function: Ideal for preventing water hammer, as the diaphragm helps mitigate backflow-induced water hammer.

• Pressure & Temperature: Best suited for low-pressure, normal temperature pipelines (pressure ≤ 1.6 MPa, temperature range: -20°C to 120°C).

• Applications: Commonly used in municipal water systems.

• Size: Can be made in large diameters (up to DN 2000mm).

6. Ball Check Valve:

• Sealing Element: Uses a rubber-coated spherical ball (single or multiple balls), providing excellent sealing performance and resistance to water hammer.

• Pressure & Size: Suitable for medium and low-pressure systems (PN ≤ 4.0 MPa), with a diameter range from DN 200mm to 1200mm.

• Material: Stainless steel body, PTFE-coated sealing elements for corrosive media.

• Temperature Range: Works within -101°C to 150°C.

• Applications: Suitable for corrosive media pipelines.
